Keep Your Windshield Clear: A Guide to Windshield Maintenance

Your windshield is more than just a view of the road ahead—it's a critical safety component of your vehicle. A clear, undamaged windshield provides structural support to your car, helps airbags deploy properly, and protects you and your passengers from wind, debris, and weather elements. Proper maintenance keeps it functioning at its best.

Regular Cleaning Makes a Difference

Start with routine cleaning, both inside and outside. Dust, dirt, and grime accumulate on your windshield and reduce visibility, which can make driving more stressful and less safe. Clean your windshield at least weekly using a microfiber cloth and glass-specific cleaner. Avoid newspaper or paper towels, which can leave streaks and lint behind. For the inside of your windshield, which tends to develop film from dashboard materials and off-gassing, clean it regularly with an appropriate interior glass cleaner.

Wiper Blade Care Matters

Your wiper blades work directly with your windshield, and worn blades can scratch the glass surface. Replace wiper blades every six to twelve months, depending on your climate and usage. If you hear squeaking, chattering, or notice streaks, it's time for new blades. In winter climates, consider winter-grade wiper blades that handle ice and snow more effectively.

Address Damage Promptly

Small chips and cracks can develop quickly into larger damage that compromises safety and requires full replacement. Environmental stressors—temperature changes, road debris, impact from gravel—can cause damage to appear suddenly. Inspect your windshield regularly for any signs of chips, cracks, or pits. The earlier you address damage, the more options you have for repair.

Protect Against Weather

Parking in shade, using sunshades, and covering your vehicle when possible extends windshield life. Extreme temperature swings from hot days to cold nights can stress glass, especially if it has existing damage. In winter, apply windshield washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures. In summer, keep your vehicle cool to prevent thermal stress on the glass.

Your windshield deserves the same attention as other critical vehicle components. Regular maintenance identifies problems early, improves visibility and safety, and protects your investment in your vehicle.
